JOSH TONSFELDT & B. WURTZ

ANNAELLEGALLERY is pleased to present a two-person show with Josh Tonsfeldt and B. Wurtz, two American artists from New York City. Representing two generations, Tonsfeldt (1979) and Wurtz (1948) use humble materials in somewhat crude constructions to create a sparse, poetic dialogue.

Josh Tonsfeldt was born in Independece, Missouri, but has lived and worked in Brooklyn, NY for ten years. Upon earning an MFA from Columbia University, Tonsfeldt has had solo exhibitions at Simon Preston Gallery, New York and Franco Soffiantino, Italy. Recent exhibitions include Massimo De Carlo, Italy; Marianne Boesky, New York; White Columns, New York; Sculpture Center, New York.

Tonsfeldt finds inspiration from things he has seen, discovered or experienced. Combining various media such as installations, prints, sculptures and paper works, Tonsfeldt tend to respond individually to each space in which he is exhibiting. At ANNAELLEGALLERY, he will present a site specific sculpture as well as a series of uniform frames that each holds a varied selection of works such as snapshots, spider webs, and prints.

B. Wurtz was born in Pasadena, California; graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1970; and in 1980 received his MFA from CalArts (California Institute of the Arts). He has lived and worked in New York since the mid-1980s. In 2000 the University of Illinois at Chicago Gallery 400 presented a retrospective of his work entitled 70 + 30 = 2000. Previously, his work has been shown at Moderna Museet, Stockholm; MoMA PS1, New York; MCA Chicago; Musee d'Art Contemporain de Lyon; RISD Museum of Art; the Corcoran Gallery; FEATURE, New York; Metro Pictures, New York; and Castillo / Corrales, Paris.

Wurtz gives new life to common found objects by playfully recontextualizing their forms. By deftly incorporating ordinary materials, such as wood packaging, plastic bags, clothes hangers, shoelaces, socks, wood, and wire, Wurtz creates juxtapositions where simple, small details amass great importance. At ANNAELLEGALLERY, Wurtz will present a set of drawings, sculptures and installations.
