In the exhibition Tomma fält fulla händer, Stina Persson continues to explore the borderland between the large and the small, the visible and the unknown. The eye turns inwards and the mediating function of the hand is crucial to exploring complex themes. Her forms dwell in the middle grounds of figuration and abstraction, inviting the viewer to interpret and approach the artworks on a personal level.
The small plaster sculptures in the exhibition take their inspiration from two cave lion cubs found on a riverbank in Siberia a few years ago. They were named Boris and Sparta. At first glance, the two were thought to be siblings, but their lives turned out to be tens of thousands of years apart. By sculpting the lion cubs in clay, then molding their insides, Persson examines history from the inside out. The result is small, clumsy abstract bodies that bear clear traces of the process.
Stina Persson reflects on spatial and existential dimensions. The works discuss the limits of material and transcendental reality.
The exhibition is Stina Persson's first solo at Anna Bohman Gallery.
STINA PERSSON, born 1983 in Burträsk, currently lives and works in Stockholm. Stina Persson holds a MFA at Umeå Academy of Fine Arts, 2013 and a BFA from Konstfack – University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm, 2009.
Stina Persson’s work has been exhibited at Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Färgfabriken, Stockholm; Liljevalchs, Stockholm; Uppsala konstmuseum, Uppsala; Bildmuseet, Umeå; Lidköpings konsthall, Lidköping; Konsthallen, Trollhättan; Skellefteå Konsthall, Skellefteå; Gustavsbergs Konsthall, Stockholm.
Stina Persson is the recipient of Ivan Aguéli Grant 2024 as well as the Marianne and Sigvard Bernadotte Grant 2022. Her solo exhibition at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm 2021 was in conjunction of receiving the Gerard Bonnier Grant. In 2019 Stina Persson became the first recipient of the Erland Cullberg Grant, granted by Evert Lundquist Ateljémuseum, which included an exhibition of her works at Anna Bohman Gallery.
Stina Persson is represented in the collection of the Swedish Public Art Agency, Göteborg Konst and Stockholm Konst. In conjunction with Stockholm City Hall’s 100th anniversary in 2023, the sculpture Kärlekspar på klippa was inaugurated by HRH The Crown Princess and Prince Daniel on Midsummer’s Eve. Other works included in Stockholm Konst’s permanent public collection is her sculpture Bära mark (en sparad rörelse) in Rågsved, Stockholm.
Stina Persson is also of current interest with her participation at Market Art Fair, Liljevalchs, 15 – 17 May and Ivan Aguéli Stipendiatutställning at Aguéli Museum in Sala, 11 May – 8 June 2024.
