Anna Bohman Gallery is pleased to present Donald Baechler’s first solo show with the gallery, Recent Birds, which includes new sculptures, collages and drawings.
Recent Birds is a clear depiction of Donald Baechler’s artistic process, in which specific motifs are repeated and reinvented, usually derived from found objects and images that could be considered banal and perhaps nostalgic. However, Baechler’s works are anonymous rather than symbolic. Through layering, editing, erasing and replacing, Donald Baechler strips his images of any narration and leaves us with often isolated forms. Heavy outlined against their backdrop, with a “fractured surface” as Baechler describes it, referring to his build up technique, the works are rarely just two dimensional nor are they fully three dimensional. As shown in Recent Birds, Donald Baechler’s figures defy the conventional aspects of a painting or a sculpture and instead find themselves somewhere in between dimensions, alienated and mute.
Donald Baechler (1956) was born in Hartford, Connecticut. Lives and works in New York. He attended the Maryland Institute, College of Art, Baltimore (1974–77); Cooper Union, New York (1977–78) and Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste Städelschule, Frankfurt am Main (1978–79)
Donald Baechler has had recent solo exhibitions at Cheim & Read, New York; Merano Arte, Merano, Italy and The Museum der Moderne, Rupertinum, Salzburg.
Donald Baechler’s work is represented in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art; The Whitney Museum of American Art; and The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, all in New York; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; The Philadelphia Museum; and The Centre George Pompidou, Musée National d’Art Moderne, Paris, among other institutions worldwide.
